International Travel Grant

Funded by OGE, the International Travel Grant (ITG) for Teachers College students engaging in academic activities abroad is intended to support travel-related expenses for conducting research, fulfilling internships, presenting at conferences, or participating in other academic activities outside of the United States.

 

Through this initiative, OGE awards up to five grants of $500 once in the fall and once in the spring semester. Eligible expenses include, but are not limited to: transportation, accommodation, conference registration fees, and supplies for research. Award recipients will be required to submit a summary report of their research or other activities following completion of their trip. OGE may publish reports on the OGE website or invite award recipients to present their work at a student forum.

 

Eligibility

Students are eligible to apply for the travel grant only once per academic year. In addition, grant applicants must be:

  • A full- or half-time matriculated, degree-seeking student taking at least 5.0 credits or the equivalent
  • A continuing student
  • Going abroad for academic purposes in the same academic year that the application is submitted

  • Award announcement: November 10, 2023
  • Disbursed by: November 30, 2023
Spring semester
  • Applications accepted: January 18, 2024
  • Deadline: February 17, 2024
  • Award announcement: March 10, 2024
  • Disbursed by: March 29, 2024

 

Application Process

Applicants must submit all of the items listed below via the Google application form. Documents should be uploaded as PDF attachments only.

  1. Proposal (maximum of 2 single-spaced pages, including budget)
  2. Updated resume or CV
  3. Supporting documents (e.g. conference acceptance letter, research and/or data collection schedule, internship award letter, etc.)*

*Documentation is not required but is strongly encouraged.

 

Tips for Success

  • Please do not copy and paste information from an event or organization's website; this will result in immediate disqualification
  • Avoid excessive jargon & explanations of research methodology; instead, please focus on the relevance of your travel opportunity and how it will contribute to your future education and/or career prospects
  • Be mindful of page limits
  • Pay attention to details such as travel dates, graduation dates, etc.
  • Show thoughtful planning and mindfulness of cost in your budget

Travel & Immigration

For more detailed information on the the College's international travel policy for students and groups, please visit the website for the Office of Risk Management (ORM). Please keep in mind that the College does not cover international student-led group trips. Please refer to the Policy for International Travel for policies relevant to travel to an extreme location (level 3 and 4).

All students who must travel internationally for work related to their graduate studies must:

  1. Notify ORM at least 60 days in advance of departure by submitting all required documents to the attention of Risk Manager, Elisha Rodriguez (ehr2122@tc.columbia.edu). Please see below for a list of required documents.
  2. Register the trip on Columbia University Global Travel “ISOS MY TRIPS.  ISOS is the global health, travel, and safety gateway for the College. Log onto Columbia University Global Travel “ISOS MY TRIPS to create your profile. You will have access to the membership card and any information relating to your travel. By taking this step, you enable ISOS (CU and TC) to send you important messages about medical and security concerns, as well as instructions for how to proceed during an emergency.

 

Student Travel Forms

As noted above, all students traveling must complete and submit the following forms to the attention of Risk Manager, Elisha Rodriguez (ehr2122@tc.columbia.edu): 

The International Travel Approval Form is an electronic form that must be routed to relevant signees in the College. The travel form has space to attach your emergency contact and itinerary documents as well. Please reach out to us to initiate this procedure.

Non-TC Travel Approval Forms

If you’re traveling out of the country for an internship or fellowship sponsored by IIE (or any other reputable organization) and you have a travel form that needs to be submitted, please send your form to OGE along with:

  • Written approval from your TC academic advisor.
  • Written approval from the Office of the Registrar confirming that you are currently enrolled and in good academic standing.
  • Letter confirming your receipt of the internship/fellowship in question.

We accept approval by email for both.


Free or low-cost immigration legal help is available from a number of organizations in New York:

  • The Immigration Advocates Nonprofit Resource Center also provides a list of immigration legal services in New York 
  • New York City provides “free, safe immigration help at ActionNYC (or call the ActionNYC hotline at 1-800- 354-0365 during business hours Monday to Friday)
