Program Schedule

  • The program dates for 2024-2025 are September 13, 2024 - Friday, May 9, 2025.
  • Please note that all courses are generally scheduled at the end of the week; classes typically take place Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays, in the morning or evening. The exact course schedule will be determined closer to the start of term.
  • Program orientation will take place Friday, September 13, 2024, with the start of classes taking place the following day (Saturday, September 14, 2024). Spring classes will run from January 31 - April 26, with graduation on May 9, 2025. There will be no classes March 21-22 for the AAAL and TESOL conferences.
  • We expect classes to be held Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings and afternoons for the Fall and Spring terms. There will be no classes November 22-23 for the ACTFL conference and November 29-30th  for Thanksgiving. Fall classes run to mid-December (with December 21 as the expected final day of fall). 

Program Policies

Certificates

Students who successfully complete the program of study, which entails earning a minimum of B- for every course taken in both the Fall and Spring semesters, will receive a Certificate of Completion. The following provisions apply:

  • Students who miss three sessions of a given course (e.g., three sessions of Practicum, APA, or Educational Linguistics) throughout the academic year, or miss less than three but do not perform satisfactorily in one or more courses, will receive a Certificate of Attendance.
  • Students who miss four or more sessions of a given course (e.g., 4+ sessions of Practicum, APA, or Educational Linguistics) throughout the academic year will not receive ANY type of certificate.
  • Students who miss the first two sessions of the program due to delays in obtaining an entry visa must make up for those sessions in the following academic year, and only thereafter will be awarded a Certificate of Completion or a Certificate of Attendance, depending on their performance. Note that the maximum delay allowed by the program is two sessions.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism of any form, including copying from the Internet, is strictly prohibited. Individuals who plagiarize will face disciplinary action including a warning from the instructor and a substantial grade reduction. Repeated offenses will lead to expulsion from the program.

Credit Transfer 

  • Graduates from the TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate Program can transfer the equivalent of six credits into their subsequent study in the Master's program of Applied Linguistics or Bilingual Education at Teachers College, should they be subsequently accepted into either program. 
  • Students concurrently enrolled in the TCSOL Certificate Program and in TC TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or Bilingual/Bicultural Education master’s programs are assured successful transfer of six credits. Students are required to complete the necessary steps outlined by their master’s program advisor in order to ensure the transfer of credits into their degree program.
  • Students concurrently enrolled in the TCSOL Certificate Program and in a TC master’s program not outlined above may be able to transfer up to six credits into their program by permission of their master’s program advisor.
