The Teachers College, Columbia University Advanced Certificate in Adult Learning and Leadership for Medical Educators is an innovative new for-credit program designed for forward-thinking medical educators looking to elevate their instructional and leadership skills.

The first of its kind in the greater New York City area, the 10-credit, New York State-approved program will focus on advancing knowledge and mastery in critical areas for medical educators, including adult learning, leadership, facilitation, innovative learning and applied research methodologies. The program has been developed – and will be taught – by the college’s experienced faculty and practitioners in adult learning and leadership. It will concentrate on knowledge and skills that have been identified through research and practice as critical for those concerned with and working in medical education.  A team of physician advisors will assist in ensuring the curriculum establishes a powerful bridge between theory and applied practice.

The field of medical education is growing rapidly and involves various constituents; the practice may be medical school based, hospital based, community based and/or across disciplines in healthcare institutions. Our program will enable participants to develop advanced skills in designing instructional interventions, and supporting and assessing adult learning for professionals, potential professionals and patients.

The targeted participants will be physician faculty, primarily in academic medicine, as they are learning leaders for other physicians in training, residents, fellows and colleagues as well as the teams with which they work.

The curriculum is delivered in a hybrid format designed for maximum time efficiency to accommodate the cycle of professional demands in physicians’ work. Through a combination of on-campus and online formats, students will earn 10 credits during one academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). These credits are transferrable to the degree programs.  An advanced certificate will be awarded from Teachers College, Columbia University, which will be reflected in the academic transcript. We are currently building our 2nd cohort which will start this coming September [2020]; we anticipate enrolling a highly passionate group of motivated physician educators who represent a wide range of specialties and institutions.

This program is designed for Allopathic physicians (MDs) and/or Osteopathic physicians (DOs). Read the Student Profile section for other attributes of the ideal student who would benefit from enrolling in this program.
