Bilingual Extension Institute

Welcome to the Bilingual Extension Institute!

Over the last two decades, more than 600 bilingual speech-language pathologists have successfully completed the Teachers College Bilingual Extension Institute, directed by Professor Catherine Crowley. Taught by an eight-person faculty and seven master clinicians, the Institute‚Äôs Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology is designed to provide students with the knowledge and clinical skills needed to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services for children and adolescents.

  • Requirements: Discipline-specific and open only to bilingual speech and language providers. 
  • Academic Credit: Offered as a credit-bearing, non-degree program. Students receive six graduate-level credits from Teachers College, Columbia University through two courses focused on assessment and treatment for pre-school and school-age children.
  • CertificateBoth the online and in-person Bilingual Extension Institute offer NYSED Bilingual Extension certificate to the NYSED Teacher of Speech and Language Disabilities (TSLD) certificate and an advanced certificate in bilingual speech-language pathology. 

The Bilingual SLP Extension Institute is still accepting applications for both the online cohort (Spring) and on campus cohort (Summer).

The Bilingual Extension Institute 2020

The Advanced Certificate provides six graduate-level credits from Teachers College, Columbia University. The program is divided into two parts, each consisting of two three-credit courses.

For holders of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) TSLD or TSHH certificates, the Bilingual Extension Institute fulfills all requirements of the NYSED, except for the NYSED BEA, the language proficiency test.

The Online Institute allows students to take advantage of a flexible, asynchronous format, with opportunities for live access to master teachers and practitioners. The Institute runs from May 3rd until July 26 and resumes August 9 until November 7th.

The On-Campus Institute meets at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City one weekend a month in May, June, September, October, November, and December. The 2020 dates are:

Friday 6-8:30, Saturday 9-4 and Sunday 9:30-3.
