This research volume seeks to promote a much-needed cross-disciplinary and cross-departmental dialogue on language-related issues in education, widening the lens from school to community and drawing in a diversity of perspectives by adding the work of graduate students from across Columbia University to the current body of literature. The multicultural landscape of New York City has produced one of the most linguistically diverse communities in the world, a reality that has served to both unite and divide residents. While New York City can serve as a microcosm of global language education and policy issues, we are also committed to presenting region-, culture-, and language-specific issues that will expand and challenge our study of language, community, multiculturalism, multilingualism, and identity.
This volume is the third in a series of graduate student research published by the Society for International Education. Publication of this volume was made possible through grants from The Center for Multiple Languages and Literacies, Teachers College, Columbia University and the Teachers College Student Senate.
