May 14, 2013
On Thursday, the Teachers College faculty made an important and bold decision to reject TC's proposed budget for FY 2014. We are grateful to the resounding majority of faculty members who voted to exercise their unique authority and to those who strove to include advocacy for students and staff as they created the resolution passed last week.
We also appreciate faculty members who have offered their time and energy over the summer months to the work that lies ahead. Fifteen years ago, a specially convened Financial Priorities Committee presented recommendations to TC President Arthur Levine and the College's Board of Trustees. At this juncture, 125 years after the founding of the college, we are optimistic that a similar college-wide conversation about TC's priorities, in the context of its mission, will serve the college well, and we encourage students who would like to join those faculty members over the summer to e-mail the Student Senate (student-senate@tc.columbia.edu ).
A central priority of the Student Senate is to increase students' opportunities for involvement in the execution of our own education. In increasing the Senate's contact with both administrators and faculty, our goal has been to ensure that students also participate in the shared governance that our faculty has highlighted as an integral part of TC's ethos. This participation has taken multiple forms, from Senate leadership reaching out directly to the Faculty Executive Committee and Department Chairs, to the Senate helping to organize larger town hall meetings with administrators, students, and faculty to discuss health care costs, TA compensation, doctoral student funding, and other student issues.
We applaud TC's students who have attended the town hall meetings and open forums, and who have come together in the past few weeks to champion their vision for TC. Attached you will find a document titled "State of the College" from the TC Faculty and you can follow the link below to visit a Columbia Spectator article concerning the recent budget rejection. As classes and exams wind down, we hope the energy does not.
