Educating for Global Peace
spiritual & ethical perspectives on peace & justice
a peace
education center & biosophical institute sponsored
lecture series
june - december 2006
INTRODUCTION
This timely and provocative lecture series was inspired by an international
teaching/research collaboration coordinated by the Peace Education Center that
explored the religious and ethical precepts of peace and justice with the goal
of introducing these foundations into peace education. The project was intended
to foster interreligious understanding and knowledge of the secular ethics
that inform principles of peace, social justice and ecological responsibility.
This series was a continuation of that theme, and featured leading and original
thinkers, most of whom have spent a lifetime dedicated to the principles of
educating for peace. Through these speakers' voices we hoped to introduce to
our audience innovative, multi-disciplinary and multi-faith perspectives about
critical and timely peace related issues with special attention given to the
role peace education can play in addressing and transforming these concerns.
In the work of the Peace Education Center (TCPEC) we have observed that in
the present age of unprecedented, ubiquitous and seemingly unending violence,
many people throughout the world have lost trust in the institutions, leaders,
and policies that determine their lives. Some have joined together in alternative
political movements and some engage in violent resistance, such as that which
caused and is exploited by the war on terror. Yet the vast majorities are paralyzed
in the face of the global crisis of violence, lacking the critical skills,
knowledge and the capacities to bring forth alternatives to confront it and
engage in a democratic process of change. The TCPEC seeks to address these
concerns through conducting research toward the further development of the
field of peace education, providing outreach and networking, resourcing, training
and in-service education.
