Global Campaign for Peace Education
Newsletter | Issue # 41 | March 2007

The Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) e-newsletter provides a monthly bulletin of GCPE news, events, action alerts and reports of peace education activities and developments from around the world.

**Please add this email address to your "safe sender" list to assure it arrives safely in your inbox.

Dear friends of the Global Campaign,

As we all know well, learning communities are central to peace education – in the classroom, in the community, in networks, within and across regions.  The GCPE, the Peace Education Center , HAP, and IIPE have contributed to intensifying peace learning network relationships and to facilitating an important mode of peace leadership, the special kind that is cultivated through collaborative, interactive learning exchanges.

It seems to me that this combined newsletter provides a space to further foster a non-hierarchical peace learning community, the kind of community that Parker Palmer describes “a chaotic, emergent, and creative force field.” The peace learning that emerges from our work as we interface with the real world problems of destructiveness and of possibility is often cutting edge.  The GCPE Newsletter offers a place to bring together information about the events where significant peace learning is taking place.

In this March Edition, the new “Peace Education Online Community” website is announced (see article in the News section below).  This new space can serve in a complementary role to the newsletter as a site for sharing peace knowledge.  I invite each of you to consider this space as providing an opportunity for “authoring” the leading edges of peace education learning.

This is possible in several ways. The “Peace Education Online Community” site makes available space for sharing research issues and participating in ongoing discussions much like university “class web” sites. The special collaboration working spaces are designed to be used for more intensified working-together interactions.

To begin, I urge you to add your profile.  Through the website, we can familiarize ourselves with each other and stay in touch.  Like an online kaffeehaus, we can meet together from afar.  We envision GCPE participation as a powerful and enjoyable way to generate energy and enthusiasm, to sustain current projects, and lift new ones into action.

I invite you to browse the topical dialogue links and add your comments.   I am sure that there are more ways to use this new peace education medium than even our brilliant web artists have envisioned.  Your ideas and insights into the ongoing construction of the website are welcome.  Please consider it a peace space for learning -- dynamically (and nonviolently) hot – a peace zone for collaborative travel.  Let’s move this world toward peace!

With warmest wishes,

Janet Gerson

Co-Director, Peace Education Center

Announcing the Launch of the “Peace Education Online Communities”
Inviting your Participation! (www.c-i-p-e.org/forum)
The Peace Education Center, IIPE, and Global Campaign for Peace Education invite you to participate in a new global online initiative “the Peace Education Online Communities.” The Peace Education Online Community is an interactive website that enables members of the global community to communicate and interact with each other through a number of tools including: online discussions, collaborative working spaces, an updatable calendar of events, member profiles, reports of institutes, the sharing of files and papers including sample curricula and best practices from local communities, and much, much more.   This web-based initiative was developed to support the members and participants of the International Institute on Peace Education, Community-based Institutes on Peace Education, and the Global Campaign for Peace Education, and other concerned educators.

The site is comprised of several specific communities some of which are restricted or private for people who are working on projects or people who have participated in specific events or programs. We invite you to participate in the “Global Classroom” and “Networking” communities which are open to anyone who registers to the site. The Global Classroom is a topic oriented space designed to facilitate discussions on issues of relevance to the peace education community. From child labor to disarmament, we encourage you to post your thoughts, research questions, or share your educational strategies on any of these topics. The Networking Community is organized geographically and is intended as a space to introduce yourself and your work within your region or community. If you are looking for a peace education event or workshop within your region we encourage you to visit the Networking community. If you post something on either the Global Classroom or Networking Community you will automatically be notified by email if someone should respond to you.

You can access the forum directly at www.c-i-p-e.org/forum. A link to the Community space is also provided in the right hand column of this newsletter. When you first visit the site you will need to register by clicking on the “create new account” link located in the “login” box on the top left of the site. Registering is a two-step process. A few minutes after you register a confirmation notice will be sent to the email address you provided. You will need to open this email and follow instructions to complete your registration. Simple instructions for navigating and using all the many features of the website can be downloaded by clicking on the link on the upper right side of the site.

The site is a work in progress. The more our designers play with it the more we discover it is capable of doing. The more you and others contribute and share your ideas and questions the more the community will come to life! We encourage you to visit and contribute often. For questions, comments, or more information contact peace-ed@tc.edu.

Human Rights Working Group visits Peru
Established by the Commission on Human Rights in 2005, The Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination recently made a visit to Peru. Chairperson-Rapporteur Ms. Amada Benavides de Pérez (Colombia), one of the Working Group’s five members, is also a member of the Global Campaign for Peace Education. The Group was in Peru from January 29 – February 2, 2007 collecting information from various government officials and members of civil society. This information seeks to “identify current manifestations and problems as well as emerging trends regarding mercenaries, mercenary-related activities and the role of private security and military companies and their possible impact on the enjoyment and exercise of human rights”. A detailed report of the Group’s findings will be submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council and the report’s contents addressed this year to the General Assembly. For more information on recommendations given and statements from Ms. Amada Benavides de Pérez, visit: http://www.ohchr.org/english/issues/mercenaries/index.htm

Arabic-English School opens in New York City
The New York City school system will open its first Arabic-English speaking public school in September 2007. Debbie Almontaser, principal of the school envisions the school as a place where students learn to become global citizens, providing an open environment where students with mixed backgrounds can learn Arabic language and celebrate Arabic culture. The school, the Khalil Gibran International Academy, will be grades 6-12, beginning the first year with sixth grade and expanding with every year. Half of the classes will be taught in Arabic. Almontaser hopes that students will be open to going into international careers after their educational experience. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/13/nyregion/13schools.html?ex=1329022800&en=58be5c8dd2ad76c6&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Centre for Human Development and Social Transformation - Nigeria
The Centre for Human Development and Social Transformation is seeking collaboration. Our vision is to build a democratic-based, culture of peace among the youth of Nigeria through various programmes of human development and social transformation. This we strive to achieve through research and training on conflict and peace building; civic education, as well as environmental awareness. Our first project -- the 'protect our future project' -- has been sponsored in part by grant from the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). It is based on the premise that in order to protect the future of Nigeria, students / youths who form a significant majority of the population should be trained to know their rights and to cultivate a culture of peace and democracy. The strategy is to train teachers in primary and secondary schools in workshops as well as student leaders in camp meeting. The teachers will in turn assist in training students on a culture of peace in the peace clubs. This training is on non-violent conflict resolution, peace education, democracy, environmental and human rights. The content of the project includes: 1.Training of Teachers, 2. Training of Students, 3. Formation of Peace Clubs, 4. Manual on Peace Building and Peer Mediation in School. The desire is that this peace and civic education project given in schools will have an effect in the wider community. Feel free to check our website: www.protectourfuture.org.   Yours faithfully, Imoh Colins

The Norwegian Peace Alliance - Norway
The Norwegian Peace Alliance, in charge of the H.A.P. involvement, is working with a new strategy to strengthen the Peace Movement as such in Norway. We want to continue using the net and have received money to update our website. It also has a link, made some years ago about Peace Education, translated to english, and arabic, since we had a close work together with teacher association in Ramalla on conflict solving programmes in schools. Much has made this work difficult, but the website was made, and we have had many visitors. The spring we will concentrate on NATO and the mixing of military and humanitarian purposes. In April the Minister Conference of NATO will be in Oslo, and we prepare for an alternative conference focus on the new NATO strategies and trying to develop a clearer mandate for our official bodies. Together with us Red Cross, Amnesty and Helsinki Comité will work. The arrangement will be on the 16th of April.
Yours, Anne Margrete Halvorsen (NPA)

ABOUT THE GLOBAL CAMPAIGN FOR PEACE EDUCATION
Founded in 1999, the Hague Appeal for Peace Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) is an international organized network that promotes peace education among schools, families and communities to transform the culture of violence into a culture of peace. The Global Campaign for Peace Education is presently being coordinated by the Peace Education Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. (peace-ed@tc.edu)

Peace education is a holistic, participatory process that includes teaching for and about human rights, nonviolent responses to conflict, social and economic justice, gender equity, environmental sustainability, international law, disarmament, traditional peace practices and human security. The methodology of peace education encourages reflection, critical thinking, cooperation, and responsible action. It promotes multiculturalism, and is based on values of dignity, equality and respect.Peace education is intended to prepare students for democratic participation in schools and society.

The Global Campaign for Peace Education has two goals:
1. To see peace education integrated into all curricula, community and family education worldwide to become a part of life;
2. To promote the education of all teachers to teach for peace.

The papers of the Hague Appeal for Peace have been archived at Swarthmore College Peace Collection and can be found at http://ww w.swarthmore.edu/Library
