In a report issued by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), charter schools are described as performing no better than traditional schools and potentially having a negative impact. "In any field, when you do experiments, there are a lot more failures than successes, especially at first," said Richard Rothstein, an EPI research associate and visiting professor of economics and education at the College.
The report is based upon data collated from 19 studies in 11 states about charter schools, tuition-free public campuses that operate under fewer federal and state regulations. It recommends that charter schools progress with caution and be held more accountable that they are currently.
The article, entitled "Charter Schools Face New Criticism," appeared in the March 31 edition of Los Angeles Daily News.
