Teacher-Student Conferences

During teacher-student conferences, Sangita has the opportunity to talk to students individually or in small groups. Through these meetings, she gauges students' learning and assesses their understanding of various content areas.

After reading Kate DiCamillo’s Because of Winn-Dixie and Donald Crew’s Googles, students work with Sangita to revise their own stories about exciting moments in their lives. They edit and revise their own work by considering dialogue, punctuation, internal thinking and lots of action. Sangita explains, “using vivid language and strings of sentences helps bring emotions and feelings to their own work”. She often uses the work of accomplished authors (mentor texts) to have students reflect on how “authors put in a lot of time and try multiple strategies to get their pieces right!”

Sangita makes it a priority to record her interactions with students during these discussions and uses the findings to plan subsequent lessons and discussions. Sangita takes extensive notes during her work with individual students. Much of her observations are recorded on charts and graphs that she creates. The chart utilized in this picture is available in pdf format.
