Education by Design
The model of experiential education I use grows out of the Critical Skills approach developed at Antioch College
New York State Math Standards
Although the emphasis in our class is not on Regents preparation, the content is linked closely with the Math A curriculum.
Reminder Posters
At the end of a unit, students make reminder posters that include examples of problems, helpful hints, and the steps used to solve similar problems.
Math Autobiographies (pdf)
At the beginning of the year, students write an autobiography of their experiences with math.
Semester Reflections (pdf)
At the end of the first semester, students reflect on their work in the class as well as the process of building our community together.
Asking Questions (video clip)
At the beginning of our unit on probability, several students made inferences based on patterns they were seeing in a problem.
Helping Others
A student asks her peer for help during the Do Now.
Debriefing Teaching
Students reflect on their learning process in several ways.
Throughout the year, Patrick and I reflect on teaching together. Often we do so by writing back and forth on the computer. Occassionally, we have decided to tape conversations.
