What experiences students and teachers bring to the classroom as well as the culture of the school community forms an intersection that I call the context. Each of these components, I believe affects how we enact learning experiences in the classroom.

Students at the Community School for Social Justice come from all over the Bronx. They enter the ninth grade with multiple experiences with mathematics

Patrick, a special education teacher of 10 years, and I have been teaching math together for almost two years. What started as a necessity has become a journey that has helped us grow together as teachers and colleagues.

The Community School for Social Justice began with one ninth grade class in the Fall of 2002 as a part of the New Visions initiative in New York City. Its vision is to foster a social justice and community minded student body and engage in project based inquiry throughout the curriculum
