Earth Friends

EarthFriends was established in the 1970s and is a supplemental education program providing fieldtrips to school students, after-school workshops for students, teacher Professional Development, and parent workshops. The EarthFriends classroom at Teachers College is a learning laboratory complete with several activity centers and a fully equipped kitchen where participants have cooking and eating experiences that teach them about “the whole story of food” including how food is grown, transported, changed, packaged, purchased, cooked, and options for handling leftover food, packaging, and utensils. At EarthFriends, participants may harvest herbs and vegetables to become part of their meal and add their food scraps to a compost box. Through these experiences participants learn what it means to be an EarthFriend—a person who makes food choices that are good for health and good for the earth.
