About the Center for Food & Environment

Published educational materials

The science education curriculum Linking Food and the Environment (LiFE) curriculum is currently being published by the National Gardening Association. The LiFE curriculum provides science education for students in the area of biology through inquiry-based investigations in the domain of food.  This domain engages students and makes science investigations meaningful to them.  In addition to teacher manuals with complete lesson plans and student packets with activity sheets and readings, the Center for Food and Environment offers professional development workshops for school districts and schools that wish to implement LiFE and resources to facilitate classroom implementation and family and community involvement.

Nutrition-related workshops and lessons

The EarthFriends program provides outreach services for children in schools, after-school programs and summer camps. Opportunities are available for fieldtrips to the EarthFriends Learning Lab at Teachers College. Workshops are also available for parent groups and teachers.

Involvement in policy development

The Center for Food and Environment at Teachers College is involved in policy to increase accessibility to healthful and ecologically sound food choices for all. At the core of the work of the center is to allow school children, teachers, parents, and others to have experiences that will allow them to make connections—connections that will help them understand where food comes from, what steps our food goes through to get to us, how what we eat impacts our short- and long-term health and how the type of system we have to produce our food impacts the natural environment.
