CALL FOR PAPERS
Teachers College, Columbia University is pleased to host the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES). We are currently soliciting proposal abstracts for presentation at the conference, scheduled for March 17 – March 21, 2008.
Conference Theme
The conference will be devoted to the theme of Gaining Educational Equity Around the World. The conference will place special emphasis on educational equity within and among regions and countries, focusing on the impact of factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, income, wealth, disability, and urbanization.
We encourage proposals that address the measurement, extent, origins, and solutions for gaining education equity on a local, national, regional, and international scale. Proposals not directly related to the conference theme may also be submitted for consideration.
Call for Papers: General Submission Procedures
Proposals for presentations may take a variety of formats, including individual papers, panels, and roundtable sessions. We invite the submission of proposal abstracts on-line or in the form of an e-mail attachment to cies2008@tc.edu. See detailed information below regarding proposal formats, presentation requirements, and submission procedures. IMPORTANT NOTICES
CIES Membership Required for All Presenters
Please note that you must be a CIES member in order to present at the annual conference. Membership includes an annual subscription to Comparative Education Review and a discount on the conference registration fee. Institutional membership does not constitute individual membership. A link to the website to join or renew your CIES membership can be accessed by visiting http://cies.us/membership.htm.
Limit on Presentation Submissions
In order to promote the participation of CIES members at the conference, individuals will be limited to one presentation in which s/he is a first author. However, individuals are welcome to participate in additional sessions as panel chairs, discussants, roundtable facilitators, and/or be a second author on another presentation. To facilitate timely review of all papers, please submit a maximum of one proposal for presentation in which you are a first author. Every panel is 1.5 hours in length, regardless of how many authors are presenting or listed on the papers.
Deadlines
Two deadlines have been established for proposal submission. The ‘early bird’ deadline is November 1, 2007. Notification of acceptance of proposals submitted by the early bird deadline will be made by November 30, 2007. The final deadline is December 1, 2007, with acceptance notification sent by January 15, 2008.

Decisions regarding proposals will be sent by e-mail. If you are unable to receive notification by e-mail, please indicate an alternative way to contact you on the proposal submission form.
PROPOSAL FORMATS
Individual Paper Proposals
Proposals for individual papers should include:
- Title of the paper
- Presenter’s name, institutional affiliation and title, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers
- An abstract of 200 words or less of the paper
- Four keyword descriptors of the paper
We are accepting proposals (1) by e-mail with the Individual Paper Proposal form attached and (2) via an on-line submission form. Submit your proposal only once.
(1) Download the Individual Paper Proposal form, complete, and e-mail to cies2008@tc.edu. The receipt of your proposal will be confirmed via e-mail within 1-2 business days.
(2) Access the on-line Individual Paper Proposal submission form by clicking HERE. You will not receive an automated reply after submitting the on-line form. Rather, the receipt of your proposal will be confirmed via e-mail within 1-2 business days.
Please note that the Program Committee will review all proposals for individual paper presentations for either a panel or a roundtable session. Acceptance notices will indicate directly if the paper has been accepted for a panel or for a roundtable session.
Keywords should be general but sufficiently descriptive to allow ready identification of the paper's principal subject matter, region of interest, theoretical approach, and/or disciplinary framework.
Panel Proposals
Proposals for 1.5 hour panel sessions should include:
- Title of the proposed panel session
- Name, institutional affiliation and title, mailing address, e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the panel chair, each presenter, and discussant(s)
- An abstract of 200 words or less for the panel
- An abstract of 200 words or less for each paper on the panel
- Four keyword descriptors of the panel
- Four keyword descriptors of each paper on the panel

Official CIES Special Interest Group (SIG) Proposals
If you would like to propose a paper or panel in the context of a CIES Special Interest Group (SIG)-sponsored session, please follow the format for a paper or panel proposal, but do not submit the proposal as listed above. Forward your proposal directly to the SIG chair or SIG program chair (go to http://www.cies.us/SIGSinfo.htm for SIG contact information).
The conference will accept a limited number of sessions that have been reviewed and approved by SIGs with official recognition of the CIES Board of Directors.
Location and Logistics
The CIES 52nd Annual Conference will take place on the campus of Teachers College, Columbia University (http://www.tc.edu) in New York City. Information regarding logistics for arrival, accommodation options, registration fees and procedures will be provided and updated in upcoming weeks. Please check back to our website regularly for updates.
We anticipate that standard presentation equipment (LCD and overhead projectors and Powerpoint-equipped PCs) will be available for all sessions. Presentation slides and electronic materials must be formatted to be PC / Microsoft Windows compatible.
