OFELIA GARCÍAPROFESSOR |
Ofelia García is Professor at Columbia University´s Teachers College in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies. She co-directs the Center for Multiple Languages and Literacies, with JoAnne Kleifgen and is the Faculty Coordinator of the Bilingual Education Program. García has been Dean of the School of Education in the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University and professor of bilingual education at The City College of New York. She is co-editor of Spanish in Context and was the editor of Educators for Urban Minorities. In 2006-2007 she published Imagining Multilingual Schools (with Tove Skutnabb-Kangas and María Torres-Guzmán), A Reader in Bilingual Education (with Colin Baker), and Language Loyalty, Continuity and Change: Joshua Fishman's Contributions to International Sociolinguistics (with Rakhmiel Peltz and Harold Schiffman). Among her other books are The Multilingual Apple: Languages in New York City (with Joshua Fishman), Policy and Practice in Bilingual Education (with Colin Baker); English Across Cultures: Cultures Across English, A Reader in Cross-Cultural Communication (with Ricardo Otheguy). In addition, she has published numerous academic articles in the areas of bilingual education, bilingualism, sociology of language, U.S. Spanish, and the education of language minorities. She is a Fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) in South Africa, and has been a Fulbright Scholar, and a Spencer Fellow of the National Academy of Education. |
