Welcome to my web page on technology and the
social studies! In this setting, I have an opportunity
to share my views on what I call the "value added" by technology
to social studies, both teaching this subject in the schools and
in teacher education generally. It's a vast topic and the potential
is huge. In this setting, I try to highlight what I believe to be
some of the important considerations and approaches to using technology
to enhance the educational experience of all social studies learners,
whatever their level. I hope you find it helpful!
Brief biography: I am currently Professor of Social Studies and Education and have served on the faculty of Teachers College, Columbia University since 1993. I received my bachelor's degree from Georgetown University in philosophy and my master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in American Civilization. I've taught American Studies at the University of Maryland and American History and Women's History at Drew, Montclair State, and William Paterson Universities, and within the University of Texas system of higher education. For eight years, I worked as a social studies teacher and administrator in New Jersey. My research interests are currently focused on the history of the social studies and diversity issues, especially as they relate to race, gender and sexuality.
