Choice, Control, & Change (C3) (grades 6, 7, or 8)

In Choice, Control, & Change you and your class will embark on an exciting
adventure— learning science through studying our diet and activity choices. By
investigating the question, How can we use scientific evidence to help us make
healthful food and activity choices?, students learn about how the human body works
and how food and activity play a crucial role in its well-being— critical ideas in science.
They engage in hands-on investigations of food preference, our food environment,
energy intake and expenditure— often termed “dynamic equilibrium” of the human
body, lifestyle related diseases, and more. Students explore and analyze their personal
food choices through scientific reasoning, and they apply what they have learned
through personal decisions related to their diet, physical activity, and overall health.

The Choice, Control, & Change teacher manual includes:

  • Lesson plans with helpful background information, practical teaching tips, and
    tools for assessment

  • Student activity sheets and readings

  • A matrix that maps Choice, Control, & Change to the National Science Education
    Standards and Benchmarks for Science Literacy
