Culture
and Society in the Caribbean
I. Historical Background (Amerindian populations, European colonization, slavery and slave systems, social structure and demographic patterns during slavery and after emancipation);
II. Microanalyses of Selected Social Institutions (economic life, family and household organizations, religion and magic, education);
III. Macroanalyses of Caribbean Societies (community study, cultural ecology, plural society and consensualism, social field); and
IV. Selected Contemporary Problems (race relations, migration, political change and ferment, present state of social scientific research).
Course Requirements
Written requirement for the course is a research paper (size optional) due on May 7nd. Theme, outline and tentative bibliography must be approved by the instructor by mid March. Late papers will not be accepted. Course grade will be based on quality of the term paper and on classroom performance.
