We manage the enrollment process for both of the Health Service Program and the Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plans. Lastly, we provide general information and administrative support for both of these services.

Betty Fairfax Professional Development Fund Grant
Teachers College, Columbia University
Request for Proposals and Application Process
Betty Fairfax, a TC student in the 1940's, along with her sister Jean, graciously donated $25,000 in the form of a challenge grant to Teachers College. Through the generosity of other alums and donors, TC successfully met their challenge. Collectively, these funds have established the "Betty Fairfax Professional Development Fund."
Betty Fairfax is fiercely devoted to helping disadvantaged young people. As a counselor at Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona, she starts her day making wake-up calls to students with attendance problems. On Saturday mornings, she visits the homes of students who were not in school. She's been known to drive around low-income areas, looking for students who are truant or who are drop-outs to encourage them to return. Now at 85, she's still at school every day. Miss Fairfax has worked more than 50 years in the Phoenix Union High School District. She's had a lot of students under her watchful eye in that time.
Jean Fairfax, a former educator and civil rights activist, spent her lifetime pursuing racial and gender justice. Miss Fairfax has been active in philanthropy for the past 35 years, serving as a trustee of numerous foundations. For the past decade she has worked as a consultant on issues of Black philanthropy. Her work with the American Friends Service Committee, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, has impacted many people and will continue on as part of her legacy.
Together, Betty and Jean give approximately $100,000 a year to charities championing the causes that exemplify their commitment to civil rights, social justice, and equal access.
The purpose of these awards is to give students the opportunity to "sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of critical issues" in education. The Fund will facilitate the involvement of Teachers College students in all aspects of professional development (i.e. research for articles/projects, conferences, etc.), especially as it contributes to individuals and/or communities of color.
The following are activities for which funding may be requested:
Grant funds may not be used for:

Each award carries a maximum stipend of $500 and will be given at the discretion of the Selection Committee. Only one award per academic year will be granted to each selected student. Awardees will be required to submit upon completion of project/conference a one page summary of how grant funds supported their career and/or education.
