Each year, the Office of Policy and Research sponsors colloquia that bring renowned policy experts to campus. These colloquia provide students with an extracurricular opportunity for study and interaction with both the speaker and the colloquia audience, which includes TC faulty and the broader New York City education community.
The OPR colloquium series expands the education dialog at TC by introducing students to noted academics, researchers, and policymakers from across the country. Colloquia are not just for TC students, however. They are open to the wider New York City and state education community. Administrators, teachers, parents, and community members bring valuable insights to education policy deliberations, thereby further enriching the experiences of TC faculty, students, and colloquium speakers.
During the 2006-2007 academic year, the Office of Policy and Research invited two colloquia speakers: Carl Kaestle and Hugh Price. Kaestle spoke on "The Federal Role in Education, Past and Present: Who's in the Policy Arena?" and Price discussed "Educating Low Achievers: Lessons from the Military." Future colloquia are scheduled on the interactive OPR calendar.

Brown Bags
The Office of Policy and Research offers several informal brown bag lunches with TC and outside faculty each semester. At these brown bags, professors share their latest work, accumulated wisdom on research and funding, and life lessons from the field of education.
In order to expand the opportunities for scholarly exchange between TC students and education policy faculty, OPR and the Policy Student Network sponsor regular brown bag lunch discussions. During the 2006-2007 academic year, brown bags covered topics from health policy to No Child Left Behind to federal funding for field-based research; they featured noted professors Arlene Ackerman, Jean Anyon, Luis Huerta, Sharon Lynn Kagan, and Doug Ready. Students and TC faculty are encouraged to attend and ask questions.
For upcoming brown bags, view the interactive OPR calendar. Please note that a light lunch is served at each brown bag.
