Topics to Be Explored

Overview of the objectives, models, and aims of cultural policy and the tools available to policy makers 

Analysis of the main changes in the environment in which cultural actors (e.g., policy makers, artist, funders, and cultural institutions) operate, and a consideration of the changes the cultural sector itself has experienced in recent years 

Globalization, philanthropy, the cultural industries, and leisure time

This course is intended for arts managers, arts funders and policy makers, artists, researchers, teachers, sympathizers, and thinkers. It is designed to provide a deeper understanding of some of the most pressing issues affecting the arts in the United States and around the world. It also seeks to examine the implications for the cultural sector of the rapidly changing political, economic and social context in which policies affecting cultural provision are formed and executed.

  May 28, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., and 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. -  (Special Lecture celebrating 25 years of the Research Center for Arts and Culture: "Another damn crossroad: arts organizations in a period of rapid social change")

Module I will begin with an overview of cultural policy objectives and the tools available to policy makers, and move to an analysis of the primary changes in the environment in which cultural actors (e.g., policy makers, artists, funders) operate.

Module II: Some Emerging Issues (5 Sessions)
June 1 -- June 4, 2010

Module II will consider the changes the cultural sector itself has experienced during recent years including topics such as capital markets, cultural diplomacy, and the US agenda.

*Non-Credit Withdrawals, Refunds, and Cancellations
To receive a full refund, written notification of a non-credit withdrawal must be received by Teachers College, Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS), up to thirty days prior to the start of the program. Written notification of a non-credit withdrawal received by Teachers College, Continuing and Professional Studies (CPS) between twenty-nine days and eight days prior to the start of the program, will receive a 50% refund. Please allow up to four - six weeks for check refunds to be processed, and five -- ten business days for credit card refunds.

Refunds will not be issued for a non-credit withdrawal within seven days of the start of the program, nor after the start date of the program.

Cancellations
Teachers College
may cancel an offering if the enrollment is considered to be insufficient. If canceled, you will be contacted and all paid tuition and associated Teachers College paid fees will be refunded.
